Student workers are important to the library and the Merrimack community. You will be helping the library assist other students, staff, faculty, administrators, and guests of Merrimack College.

Library work can help you:

  •  Learn about the library and the campus
  •  Gain customer service skills
  •  Learn new technologies
  •  Obtain work experience for building your resumé 
  • Meet a diverse community of people

McQuade's Mission

McQuade Library is an evolving center for learning, study and research. Rich in traditional print materials, media, and digital resources, it provides work spaces for groups as well as quiet corners for solitary study. Skilled and dedicated staff members are ready to assist students with anything from a simple article request to a full-scale research project, facilitating use of the broad-ranging collections both physical and virtual." 

Job Overview

Most of your time will be divided between desk duty, shelving, setting displays, link checking, as well as many other tasks that could arise. You are responsible for the circulation of library materials, including reserve items. You will be required to check these items out and back in properly, re-shelve them correctly, and keep the stacks in the best possible order. 

General Expectations:

  • Your cell phone should be silenced and put away
  • The use of headphones/earbuds is not permitted
  • Visitors at service desk should be limited to five (5) minutes 
  • Eating at the service desk is not permitted 
  • Greet patrons and building visitors while they pass
  • Complete all work tasks before working on homework or personal projects
  • Be on time for your shifts and keep absences and tardiness to a minimum
  • Read and respond to all work-related communications (email, texts, etc.)
  • Communicate any issues or problems with a supervisor
