McQuade Library Student Worker Training Guide

Confidentiality Policy

  • As an employee of McQuade Library, you will be working with sensitive and confidential information. What we learn in the Library about Merrimack College students, staff, faculty, and visitors is not to be discussed with anyone else. All McQuade Library employees are required to strictly maintain the privacy of library clients by not divulging any personal account information, including titles and subject matter of materials used or borrowed, to anyone other than library personnel or authorized officials.
  • Employees are not to access confidential information for any reason other than what has been authorized by their supervisor. A person’s library records fall under the American Library Association Policy and state privacy laws, as well as the Federal Educational Rights Privacy Act (FERPA). Patron identity must be verified before releasing personal records. Any request from a third party for patron information will be referred to the Head Librarian. All staff must be diligent in the shredding of all waste documents that contain personal information.
  • In accordance with U.S. Privacy Act of 1974 and the Policy on the Confidentiality of Library Records adopted by the Council of the American Library Association, January 20, 1971, all library records relating to an individual patron and his/her use of the library and its resources are confidential. These records may be consulted and used by library staff in the course of carrying out library operations, but will not be disclosed to others except upon the request or consent of the library user, or pursuant to subpoena, court order, or otherwise as required by law. Such disclosure may be made only by the Head Librarian in consultation with appropriate college authorities. Individuals may visit and use the Library's web site at any time without telling the Library who they are or revealing any information about themselves. This statement applies to all portions of the Library's web site except those restricted to Merrimack College students, faculty, and staff by license agreement or copyright law.

Violation of this policy is grounds for dismissal.
