McQuade Library has a number of resources covering a wide range of topics of interest to members of the LGBTQ community and their allies.
This guide is designed to provide an overview of available resources as well as information on the Merrimack College Safe Zone program, a program that promotes awareness, education, and support of issues faced by members of the LGBTQ community.

LGBTQ History Month
"Why do we celebrate LGBT History Month?
The month is meant to highlight and celebrate the history and achievements of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people. According to GLAAD, “during the early years, the celebration was largely marked by a call to action and commemoration. But since then, LGBT History Month has blossomed into a national coordinated effort to highlight exemplary role models from the LGBT community. Since 2006, this push has so far been led by LGBT rights and education organization Equality Forum.”

Trans Day of Visibility
Trans Day of Visibility (TDOV) was founded in 2009 by activist Rachel Crandall because the only widely observed day of recognition for transgender folks was Trans Day of Rememberance, which is recognized on November 20th and focuses on remembering those who have died from anti-trans violence. Rachel Crandall wanted to celebrate the courage and vitality of people while are alive and uplift their accomplishments and experiences.
Pride Month
The majority of Pride events are held in June to commemorate the anniversary of the Stonewall Rebellion in New York City on June 28, 1969, which most historians consider to be the birth of the modern LGBT movement.

At the time, police raids on bars catering to LGBT patrons were common, but that night, the patrons of the Stonewall Inn fought back. While historical accounts of the night vary, the violent response ignited a national firestorm of activism that brought new visibility to the struggle for LGBT equality.
