Strategies for Finding Books

Use McQuade's online catalog to find resources on your topic.

  • Searching in this box will provide you with a list of resources available at McQuade Library.

Expand your search to include all NOBLE libraries.

Click on the box that says "Merrimack College" and select "NOBLE" from the list of libraries.

  • Searching in this box will provide you with a list of resources available in all 28 of the NOBLE libraries.
  • You can request available items from any of the NOBLE libraries and they will send the item to the McQuade Library where you can pick it up at the Help Desk.

Keyword Searching vs. Subject Searching

  • Completing a keyword search means that catalog is looking for your search terms anywhere they appear in an item record.
  • Completing a subject search means the catalog is looking for your search terms in relation to the Library of Congress subject headings that are assigned to each item.

Subject headings are terminology carefully selected and applied to particular items so as to avoid the scattering of related subjects under different headings. When you are browsing through subject headings, you are looking through a collection of carefully selected relevant items.

Subject headings can be found near the bottom of any catalog item page.

The library uses the Library of Congress Classification system. Find the call number associated with your subject to browse the stacks and discover the various books at McQuade on that subject.

At McQuade, call numbers A-HN are located on the 2nd floor.

Call numbers HQ-Z are located on the 3rd floor.

Strategies for Finding Ebooks & DVDs

Many of the ebooks available to Merrimack College students can be read directly in your device browser without needing to check out the item or download extra apps.

To narrow your search exclusively to ebooks, change the format type from "All Formats" by selecting "E-book" from the format dropdown menu below.

  • This search box is only providing resources in the McQuade Library collection. Unlike physical books, ebooks cannot be borrowed from other libraries.
  • Also unlike print books, ebooks do not need to be checked out to be read.
  • To make sure an ebook is available to view or download, look for a green "Access for Merrimack College" link in the item record.

The McQuade Library subscribes to several resources that provide you with access to ebook collections.

To search for DVDs available at McQuade Library, select "Video (All)" from the Format drop-down menu then search for the title.

  • The box below is defaulted to search the McQuade Library collection first, but movies can be borrowed from many other libraries in our consortium.
    • Select "NOBLE (All Libraries)" from the location drop-down menu to search the holdings of all libraries
    • If the title is available to borrow from another library you will need to use your library barcode number and library password to place the hold. You will receive a notification to pick-up your movie at the first floor Help Desk when it arrives.
