ENG1050: Introduction to College Writing (Pinkowski)

ARTstor

Search over 270 collections from the world's museums, archives, libraries, artists, and scholars all in one place. The Artstor Digital Library provides straightforward access to curated images from reliable sources that have been rights-cleared for use in education and research. Unlike results from Google, the images from Artstor come with high-quality metadata directly from the collection catalogers, curators, institutions, and artists themselves. For more information see ARTstor's guides.

Keyword Search

Search for a keyword such as “dress," “bowl,” or "peacock."  You can then filter your results by geography, classification, and date--or search within your results for additional terms to further narrow your results.

Advanced Search

Use advanced search when you know what you are looking for. Select one or several keywords, such as an artist’s name or a specific work, and choose which metadata fields you would like to search (default is to search all fields).

If you are looking for works from a specific period and location, you can conduct an advanced search without keywords and limit by date, geography, and classification. For example, if you are looking for paintings from the Italian Renaissance, you could conduct the following search:

The search results will include all the paintings in Artstor created by Italian artists between 1400 and 1600.

Comparing Images

You can compare up to 10 images at once using our comparison mode. You may want to use this feature when presenting in the classroom or conducting research for a paper.

You may compare images from a set of search results, an image group, or a collection page:

  • To compare images from search results,  start by opening one of the images you would like to compare.
  • To compare images from an image group, begin by opening the image group and selecting the first image you would like to compare.
  • To compare images from a collection, begin by opening the collection and selecting one of the images you would like to compare.

Next, view the image in fullscreen mode:

Next, select "Compare" in the upper right corner. In the panel on the right, you may select up to 10 images from your search results, image groups, or collection page to view at once.

Clicking "Compare" in the upper right a second time will hide the image thumbnail panel. To exit comparison mode, select "Exit."
