Finding and using data from ICPSR

Finding Data Sets

Searching ICPSR
  • From the main page select the Find Data tab in the top menu bar. Use the drop-down menu and select Find Data
  • Search by survey name, principal investigator, or by subject and/or keyword
  • Explore the Browse feature located below the Find Data search box to locate data by topic, series, thematic data and data-related publications
Navigating Search Results
  • Your search results are a list of datasets or study documents. Select a result and explore the features circled in the image below.

  • Download - Download study documentation or data in a variety of formats.
  • Analyze Online - if available, run basic crosstabs, frequencies, and complex analyses without downloading any data for a series.
  • At a Glance - provides a complete description or abstract of the study.
  • Data & Documentation - provides access to downloadable data in a variety of formats.
  • Variables - provides information on the variables used in the study.
  • Data-related Publications - provides a list of citations for publications based on the dataset if available. 
  • Export Metadata - download study-level metadata records in DDI format using information supplied by data depositors and other sources.

Downloading Data Sets

  • Most of ICPSR datasets can be downloaded by current Merrimack students, faculty, and staff only.  
  • Federally funded data are freely available to the general public.
  • By downloading data from ICPSR, you are agreeing not to share the data with persons not authorized by ICPSR to receive it and to follow the terms of use.

 Steps for downloading data:

  1. login to your ICPSR account
  2. In the study you located click the Download button and select your desired data format.
  3. Read the Terms of Use prior to hitting "Agree" button
  4. The download, into .zip file, should begin immediately.
