Reference Sources

Reference sources help a researcher three ways: First, they provide background knowledge that sets a topic in context, and gives names, dates, subtopics, etc.  Second, they provide a more focused vocabulary (with terms defined)  for more precise computer searches.  Third, they provide a listing of pertinent articles and books to consult.

Reference sources are available in general or subject specific contexts and in print or online formats. You need to evaluate each source and determine which are helpful to you and appropriate for you to use.

Examples:

  • Encyclopedias
  • Dictionaries
  • Almanacs
  • Glossaries
  • Handbooks
  • Atlases
  • Bibliographies
