Commentaries are works that comment on and interpret the texts in the Bible in minute detail, from one verse to another. They vary in theological perspectives and intended audiences. McQuade owns several; we have listed a few of the more prominently known multi-volume sets and one volume works on this guide.
At McQuade, most biblical commentaries are found on 2nd floor atrium on low shelving in BS 491.2 area. It's a good idea to browse this section to see most of the commentaries that we own. There are also additional commentaries in circulating stacks BS491 area.

A Bible Dictionary (or Bible Encyclopedia) provides important facts and background information regarding a biblical topic. Depending on the particular dictionary, entries contain information about:

Get some context. Learn about the world of the text. What can be known of the historical situation prior to and during the time the biblical book was written? How did society function at that time, e.g., what was the status of women, children, or slaves in the culture, what religions existed at the time of writing, or what were the main cultural values in society?
