Winter 2015 Print Page

Happy New Year and Welcome to "Spring" Semester!

I hope by the time you are seeing this classes will have met for 5 whole days in a row.  The library staff have not let the weather slow us down--keep reading for details of what's been happening.  And think warm thoughts!

New and Improved Alden Lab

Librarian C.J. Wong works with first year engineering students in Alden.

During the Fall 2014 semester librarians taught over 100 course-integrated library workshops.   Although librarians often travel to classrooms to offer these customized workshops, the majority of these workshops are held in the Alden Lab, McQuade's dedicated instruction space located on the 3rd floor across from the Writing Center.   Over the summer, the Alden Lab received a makeover.  The lab transformed from a traditional lab of forward-facing rows and hardwired computers, to a flexible, open environment of tables conducive for laptops and tablets.  Since there are no longer desktop computers in this space, students are encouraged to BYOD (Bring Your Own Device).  Librarians also use a  "Lab in A Box," which is a cart of 15 laptops.  Tables are on wheels which allow librarians to successfully facilitate group work and provide individualized research assistance to students.  Librarians continue to use Alden's instructional technologies such as the interactive EnoBoard for database demonstrations and the document camera to project syllabi and print resources, etc.  There is ample whiteboard space at the front of the room for notes and brainstorming.

This new, flexible configuration serves the program well, as librarians continue to incorporate more group exercises and activities into their pedagogies in order to increase student engagement, collaboration, and learning.  In the fall, librarians piloted a new "Evaluating Search Tools" group activity in all First Year Writing (FYW) courses; librarians and FYW faculty alike witnessed increased levels of student engagement and participation.

Librarians Work with International Students

Librarian Elizabeth Sarkodie-Mensah takes new International Students on a tour of the McQuade Library.

Every year, Merrimack College welcomes an increasing number of international and intercultural students.  These students who are studying in another culture and educational system may have some difficulties conducting research because library services and resources may be very different from those in their native countries.   McQuade Librarians work in collaboration with Maura Shaffer, Academic Counselor for International Students, in order to make sure that these students are comfortable using library services and resources.

McQuade Library has published an international student guide that is designed to assist international and intercultural students use Merrimack College's McQuade Library effectively.

    Shifting Shelves

Over Winter Break library staff began shifting books on the Third Floor of McQuade. The goal is to move books off top shelves too high to reach, and off shelves on the floor.  At the same time we are moving shelves closer together to eventually make room for our rapidly growing DVD collection.

Consequently Science and Literature books may not be where you expect them. And the literature books now span across the North and South stacks on the Third Floor.  Check labels at the end of the stacks, or ask for help locating books.

Librarian Office Hours at Mendel Tuesdays 1:30pm-3pm

Science and Engineering Liaison Librarian C.J. Wong has office hours at Mendel Tuesday afternoons from 1:30-3pm this semester.  She'll bring new books to share and is available for consultations with students and faculty.
