Finding Scholarly Articles

These databases include articles from both Popular and Scholarly sources.  Always evaluate your sources carefully to be sure that you have the types articles you need!

For off campus access, use the 14 digit number on the back of your MACKCard, and your library password.

History Databases:

Interdisciplinary Databases:

Use Boolean Operators (ANDOR, and NOTto connect keywords or search words. This will help you search databases more effectively and efficiently, by retrieving more accurate results.

Use AND to connect two unlike words and narrow your search:

  • black power AND women

Use OR to connect two like words and broaden your search:  

  • nonviolent resistance OR passive resistance 

Use NOT to exclude a word from your search results:

  • voter registration AND civil rights movement NOT Alabama

 Place an asterisk (*) after the root of one your keywords to perform a Truncated search.  This search is useful for plural terms, or words with multiple endings as this will search for all the endings at the same time.

For example:

  • industr* - will search for industrial, industries, industry

In addition to the library databases, you can use Google Scholar to search for journal articles.

Use the Interlibrary Loan- Article Request Form to request materials that are not available through the McQuade Library.
